Austrian authorities say an American man died while hiking in the mountains as part of a school trip.

Police in the southern village of Heiligenblut say 18-year-old Christopher Yates lost his life when he slipped and fell about 80 feet into a stream bed and hit a rock on Monday.

They say the resident of Park City, Utah, was part of a large group of high school students from his town on a trip to Europe.

Heiligenblut is located in the Alpine republic's province of Carinthia.
