Basic Creek Reservoir opened to fishing, hiking bird watching
By EmpireStateNews.net

Mayor Gerald Jennings has announced the reopening of the Basic Creek Reservoir to shoreline fishing, hiking and bird watching. The 265 acre City of Albany reservoir, located in the Town of Westerlo, was closed following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. Opening day is set for Friday, June 20.

The mayor said the 741 million gallon reservoir, surrounded by 605 acres of city-owned land, will be open dawn to dust to warm weather fishing, birdwatching and limited hiking.

Only worms and artificial lures will be permitted for use as bait. No boats are permitted. At least for the first year, ice fishing will not be permitted, and the area will be closed during the winter months.

The Department of Water and Water Supply has enhanced security at the facility, including installation of continuous surveillance cameras and other security measures, and the requirement that a photo identification car be issued to anyone using the reservoir and its grounds.
