An investigation is under way after a dead body was found on a hiking trail near Cathedral City Monday.

Authorities say a hiker walking with his dog stumbled across the body in the San Jacinto Mountains south of the Cathedral City Cove just after 12:30 p.m. The location is about a half-mile from Foothill Drive.

Police and the county coroner were called out to the scene after the discovery.

The circumstances behind the death have not been determined.
