Bloomington City Council members want to move forward with a sales tax increase soon. Some members support the quarter-cent increase, others support it with some conditions, but one thing was clear at last night's city council meeting.
Alderman John Hanson says it is the most equitable tax.
The increase must be approved by April in order for it to take effect in July. Council members will discuss the details of an increase at the February 11th meeting.
The council last night approved a two dollar increase in the garbage fee and an increase in the packaged liquor tax. Alderwoman Judy Stearns voted against the garbage fee increase. She says the city needs to look at internal spending more before raising fees.
The fee will go from $5 to $7 starting in April. The town of Normal is also considering a similar increase.
