A local nonprofit organization is looking to re-establish and maintain recreation trails in town.
Diane Phillips, president of Friends of the East Bridgewater Trails said the aim of the group is to promote “non-motorized” activities, such as biking, walking, and horseback riding, by cleaning up, and maintaining trails in town.
Phillips, an avid hiker, said there used to be about 22 trails in town, that are now in “disrepair, or the property boundaries are fuzzy.” The key trail in town the group would like to focus on is part of the Bay Circuit Trail, a recreation trail that connects 34 towns in Massachusetts.
In East Bridgewater the trail is about a mile long and runs from the area of Route 106 near the YMCA to Bridge Street.
Phillips recently discussed with the Board of Selectmen the possibility of revitalizing the trail, because no one is maintaining it
Selectmen and Phillips agreed that a good place for the group to start is by connecting with the Recreation Commission in town.
Phillips said she hopes to work through the Recreation Commission to see if they could be a “sub-group of them.” According to her, the trails would be more than a route to health and exercise, but could also provide a way for students to walk to school safely.
Selectwoman Theresa McNulty said “it would be great to revitalize some of the trails in town to create a safe environment for the community,” and hopes the group can coordinate with Selectmen, Recreation Commission, and Department of Public Works to organize their effort.
McNulty also said the group should reach out to Scout troops in town to see if they would be willing to help with the project.
