Get started hiking on National Trails Day
By GoErie.com

No matter where you might live in northwestern Pennsylvania, there's a hiking trail not so very far away. So on Saturday - National Trails Day - why not get out for a stretch of the legs and a breath of fresh air?

If you're not sure where to start, try one of these six hikes. To branch out, visit state parks or their Web sites for maps, guidelines and suggestions, or try any of a number of helpful books on the subject, including "Hiking Pennsylvania (Human Kinetics, $15.56 amazon.com) by Erie Times-News outdoors columnist Mike Bleech.

Wherever you hike, don't forget the essentials: Water, proper footwear, sunblock and a Deet-based insect repellent. For longer or remote hikes, add a compass and matches in a waterproof container; a hiking stick; and at least a snack. Carry binoculars and a camera if you're watching wildlife, and find a shoulder bag, lumbar pack or backpack suitable for carrying all your gear.

Sidewalk Trail, Presque Isle State Park
The 1.25-mile straight-arrow path cuts through the heart of the park between the lakeside Presque Isle Lighthouse and the multipurpose trail at Misery Bay, following a century-old path used by the former lighthouse keepers. A boardwalk was replaced in 1925 with concrete that runs the length of the trail. Sidewalk leads to a nexus of trails that vein throughout the park interior and offer a far more intimate view of the peninsula than the bayside or beach attractions offer. Sidewalk is wonderful for a leisurely after-dinner stroll, or as part of an all-day stay at the park.
