Hiking drinking age will hurt downtown bars
By Windsor Star

It has come to my attention there is a proposal to change the legal drinking age from 19 to 21. This change is supported by medical agencies for the right reasons, but I believe their view is from a very narrow perspective.

Parents may not want to hear this, but odds are their teen has already had an experience with alcohol. I will not deny that underage drinking is a problem, but most teens do not turn into alcoholics or drink and drive. Just because the legal age changes doesn't mean that this will go away, it will only get worse because of the larger number of people who would become underage. Just because teens are not yet adults, doesn't mean they are not resourceful. Anyone could get alcohol from their parents' cupboard, find someone who is old enough to buy it for them or even produce a fake ID. This law is not a solution to the problem; it will only create more problems.

As for drinking and driving, it's a stupid decision that many adults also make, it's not just teens. The economy in Windsor and much of the province is suffering right now. This law would take away most of the business from the downtown area because of all the Americans who come here to the bars and clubs.
