A Burlington hiking group, the Great River Ramblers, is looking for anyone interested in getting out in nature at least once a month.
Ed Whitmore, one of the founders of the group, said hikers meet at 9 a.m. the first Saturday of each month at First Presbyterian Church, 321 N. Fifth St., then carpool to a designated hiking spot. The start time is moved up an hour to 8 a.m. during the summer months.
Whitmore said the hikes have taken place all around the area, often in places longtime local residents have never visited. They range in length from about a mile to three miles.
Among the sites visited are Blackhawk Bottoms south of Burlington, Gladstone Lake in Illinois, the Burlington Golf Club course and Hunt Woods southwest of Burlington.
In the two years since the group formed, Whitmore said inclement weather has forced them to "hike" inside Westland Mall three times.
Rainy weather is not a hindrance, he said, just icy conditions in which someone could fall.
To join the group, just show up at the church the first Saturday of the month.
