Hiking in high country still dangerous
By The Olympian

The past few days felt more like March than June in South Sound, and it’s still raging winter in the high country of the Cascades and Olympics.

One hiker died and two others suffered frostbite when they were caught in a harsh snowstorm near Camp Muir in Mount Rainier National Park in the Cascades on Monday.

And in the Olympics, four people have had to be rescued in the past two weeks from Mount Ellinor in Mason County.

Experts at Western Washington national parks and national forests say that trails that are usually clear in mid-June are still buried under several feet of snow above 3,000 feet in elevation.
