Hiking Safety Tips
By Tracy Armbruster Anchor

In light of the Meredith Emerson tragedy, the UGA graduate who was brutally killed while hiking alone, local authorities are trying to get the word out about the Do’s and Don’ts of hiking.  Even for the most experienced hiker, knowing these safety tips could help save a life.

“I’ve spent a lot of time on the Appalachian Trail,” says Jackie Whitmire.

Jackie Whitmire isn’t just the Toccoa Police Chief, he’s also an experienced Boy Scout.  Hiking is his passion, just like it was Meredith Emerson’s.  The UGA graduate’s New Year’s Day hiking trip had ended in tragedy.  Days later, authorities charged 61-year-old Gary Michael Hilton with her death.

“I hope nothing like that happens again,” Whitmire tells Newschannel 32.

Whitmire is using Emerson’s tragedy to get the word out about hiking safety.  His first tip is

“Tell someone where you are going, where you plan to start, where you plan to come out and the approximate time you plan to come back home,” explains Whitmire.

Whitmire also recommends not hiking alone.  Travel with a partner or with groups, some might even hike with a dog.  Bringing along weapons are not necessary; although Whitmire says he knows some people who carry a gun.  If you feel you are experienced enough to venture out alone,

“Be careful when you meet people, be watchful and watch for body language,” continues Whitmire.

And, don’t forget to fill a backpack with all the hiking essentials, including a first aide kit, food, and plenty of water.  But, if you get lost,

“Stay put, and they say ‘hug a tree,’” adds Whitmire.

Hikers should know how to build fire and shelter.  But, above all, you should have fun while hiking.

Chief Whitmire also recommends carrying a whistle while hiking because if you do get lost a whistle can be heard further away than just screaming for help.
