Spring is a perfect time of year in the Valley; the weather is great, the sun is rising sooner and setting later.
It’s also the perfect time of year to hike any of the Valley’s mountain trails and for reminders about how to stay safe while hiking now or any time of year.
Mountain rescues happen several times every year in the Valley, and around the state, and the rescuers want to remind hikers about some of the basics before heading out on the trail.
Phoenix fire department chief Mark Faulkner spoke with ABC15’s Tony Arranaga Thursday morning, with some safe-hiking tips:
· Bring plenty of water (One quart for short hikes-more for longer hikes).
· A water pack is preferable for you to keep your hands free while hiking.
· Wear appropriate footwear, preferably hiking boots.
· Wear light-colored, comfortable clothing.
· Bring a hat and sunblock (SPF 15 minimum).
· Basic first aid supplies.
· Cell phone.
Also, tell someone where you will be hiking and when you expect to return, know the park and trail you’ll be hiking, know the terrain and stay on trails, know your limitations and skill level.
Mountain rescues can be avoided when hikers are prepared.
Remember, while firefighters are rescuing a stranded or injured hiker it takes them away from fire and medical calls in their area, and that could mean the difference of life or death for a family member.
