Hope for the Best, Expect the Worse; Hiking
By Examiner.com

This has been my mantra in life and when preparing for hikes in the mountains.

Here are some hints on how to prepare for hiking at high elevations.

When you head out for high county, start early and make sure that you have gear for every type of conditions: rain, snow, and watch out for high altitude sun. Bring sun block, baseball hat, pants, wind breaker, and extra food and water.

One method for getting up to date trail conditions is by viewing road cams on Interstate 70 or ski resort cams. I bookmark Winter Park Resort’s cams to watch the weather on the ski mountain. I live 20 minutes north of the resort and the conditions are always different than Granby.

14ers.com is a great website to check trail conditions while planning a hike. When you get home, write an updated trail condition post as a way to say thanks.

Safety First. Hikers can purchase a search and rescue card that covers the cost of a rescue if you get lost. The Colorado Outdoor Recreation Search and Rescue (CORSAR) card is available for purchase for 1-Year $3.00 or 5-year $12. For more information about the card visit their website or call 970-248-7310.

Here's a photo of Dann Miller, a Denver Examiner, this weekend in the mountains. Dann was wearing shorts when he plunged into deep snow while hiking. Please don't try this.

There's still a lot of snow in the mountains. Remember – weather on the high peaks can change in an instant. Unpredictable weather conditions across the county affect mountain climates, too. Always be prepared with extra clothes (layers) and food (high energy bars).
