Idaho Conservation Leagues Summer Hiking Series

Wednesday, July 2 – Robin Garwood, wildlife biologist with the Sawtooth National Forest,will lead us on a hike on the north side of Greenhorn Gulch. See the aftermath of last summer’s Castle Rock fire and learn about its impacts on local wildlife populations. 5-6 miles. Moderate.

Saturday, July 12 – East Fork Big Wood River to Parker Gulch. This is a great hike close to town, and it’s not in the guidebooks. Hike from East Fork over the saddle to finish in Elkhorn. Enjoy great views on a beautiful trail which is sparsely used. It immediately becomes a favorite hike of everyone. 8 miles. 2000’ elevation gain. Strenuous.

Wednesday, July 16 – Norton Lake – Big Lost Lake Loop – This challenging hike in the Smoky Mountains near Sun Valley has everything – alpine scenery, wildflowers and several remote lakes. Mountain goats love the surrounding cliffs and peaks. 5 miles. 1600’ elevation gain. Strenuous.

Sunday, July 27 – Wolf Ecology Hike near Stanley – Join Lynne Stone of the Boulder-White Clouds Council and ICL’s John Robison to look for wolves, wolf track and sign, and discuss the future of wolf management in Idaho. Bring your family to learn more about wildlife. 4 miles. Moderate.

Saturday, August 2 – Kane Lake – One of the nearest lakes in the Pioneer Mountain proposed wilderness. This beautiful lake is surrounded by waterfalls, and it should be a great waterfall year because of the heavy snow fall. A good portion of the trail is over rocks and not maintained. 7 miles. 1600’ elevation gain. Strenuous.

Wednesday, August 6 – North Fork of the Big Wood – Join the Sawtooth Forest’s Ed Cannady for a great hike to look at a current issue in Ketchum’s back yard. The hike date is flexible, in case of fires or other forest priorities. 5-8 miles. Moderate to strenuous.

Saturday, August 16 – Amber Lakes. These lakes are the crown jewel of the North Fork of the Big Wood River area. The lakes are nestled below peaks in the Boulder Mountains. This hike was cancelled last year because of the Castle Rock fire. 8.5 miles. 1800’ elevation gain. Moderate to the basin, difficult to the upper lakes.

Saturday, August 23 – Washington Lake. This is the easiest hike of the season. We’ll hike to Fourth of July Lake in the White Cloud Mountains and then continue over the low ridge to Washington Lake. Washington lake is a blue gem set in a deep valley.

5 miles. 600’ elevation gain. Moderate.
