Make hiking safe, fun for canine companions
By Asheville Citizen-Times

Nothing beats a hike through the mountains with a four-legged companion who delights in the fresh air and tantalizing scents along the trail — and who never, ever whines, “Are we there yet?”

Dogs of all ages and sizes love a trek through the woods, but their experience — and yours — can be enhanced with some products specifically designed for your pooch, from booties to collapsible water bowls to ergonomically correct backpacks that will haul all of their supplies and some of yours.

A pup hiking with a pack is not just a convenience to its humans; it also can accelerate the dog’s workout, says Adelaine Lockwood, owner of Blaze & Skyy Pet Boutique and Wellness Center on Wall Street in downtown Asheville.

“The American Kennel Club says it’s safe for a dog to carry up to a third of its body weight. And a one-mile walk becomes a two-mile walk with the added weight,’’ Lockwood said. “The dog gets double the exercise, and that’s especially good for herding and working breeds. And it’s good for humans because they can carry some of our weight.”

There are myriad products for both fun and safety at pet supply stores, pet boutiques and outdoor outfitter shops in the area.
