Ohio Boy Scout dies on hiking trip
By WTTE

Authorities say an 11-year-old boy has died after collapsing on a hiking trip with his Boy Scout troop.

Ross County Sheriff Cpl. Jason Williams says Payden Sommers was hiking Saturday evening with his troop in Tar Hollow State Park in southern Ohio. His scout leader noticed Sommers was struggling to keep up with the group and tried to cool him down by giving him water.

Williams says Sommers, of Chillicothe , collapsed and stopped breathing shortly afterward.

Scout leaders performed CPR until paramedics arrived and pronounced Sommers dead around 7:30 p.m.

Williams says the boy was dehydrated and did not have any predisclosed medical condition that might have caused his collapse.

The Montgomery County Coroner's office is conducting an autopsy report.
