Speaking of hiking and butterflies
By KeepMEcurrent.com,

The York County Senior College will present the second in its seminar series, Feb. 13, in morning and afternoon sessions at the Notre Dame Spiritual Center in Alfred.

Both talks will concern the outdoors, heralding the impending spring. The morning session, meeting from 9:30 to 11:30, will describe the 2,200 mile adventure of Bill Ware, a fellow senior who hiked every inch of the Appalachian Trail.

Ware lives in a log cabin that he built himself in Limerick. He is a former farmer, banker, retailer and truck driver. As an outdoorsman, he hunts, fishes and hikes.

He invites his audience to join him on the 2,200 mile journey from Georgia to Mt. Katahdin - in the comfort of Notre Dame. Ware assures us that 65 is not "old age."

After lunch served at the Brothers' dining hall, the afternoon segment will feature Dr. Bud Johnston on the ethereal subject of butterflies.

Have you wondered what butterflies see?, Johnston asks. Do you know why they play in puddles? Dr. Johnston, named in 2007 as the Citizen of the Year by the Sanford Kiwanis Club, is a well known man of science and a popular, frequent speaker on a variety of environmental subjects.

His session will run from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Reservations will be welcome by calling the Senior College at 324-6012. The cost for both sessions, lunch included, is $12.

The mission of York County Senior College is to provide a curriculum of intellectually stimulating learning opportunities and special activities for persons 50 years of age or older. Begun in 1999, Senior College is governed by a volunteer committee who oversees its general operations.
